It can be intimidating but Fiumicino airport to Rome doesn’t have to be hard.
It’s ranked among the best airports in Europe so it should straight forward, but it’s not so close at 30 km away and Italy isn’t exactly known for efficiency of any kind.
With this guide though you’ll get to Rome fast and cheap and be eating carbonara in no time!

When people ask me how to get to Rome city centre from Fiumicino airport I always tell them about the train first. After baggage claim getting to the airport train station is simple.
It won’t take you more than 10 minutes.
After you exit the arrival area just follow the signs to the trains. The station is connected to the terminals via an elevated tunnel and some escalators.
Tickets for both trains from Fiumicino to Rome city centre can be purchased at the ticket desks and ticket machines in the station itself or on the the Trenitalia website.
This Fiumicino train goes directly to Rome’s main train station Termini.
The journey takes 32 minutes.
Departures are scheduled every 15 minutes. Trains are usually on time and the service is guaranteed even in case of strikes.
Tickets cost €17.90 each way.
Once at Termini you can take the metro line A to anywhere else.
This commuter line part of Rome public transport goes to Tiburtina station making several stops in the city at Ostiense, Trastevere, and Tuscolana.
It doesn’t go to Termini.
It departs every 15 to 30 minutes and the journey takes 47 minutes to Tiburtina. It’s cheaper than the Leonardo Express (€8.00 each way) but less reliables and more likely to be delayed.
Getting to Termini from the airport by bus takes about an hour. It can however take longer at peak hours so keep that in mind.
Tickets for all bus companies can be purchased on the official websites of each company or onboard. It is cheaper and quicker to go the online route, so I will be listing these below.
Don’t want to online?
There kiosks at the bus departure area of the airport at Terminal 3 but it’s a small ticket area and in my experience you have to wait unnecessarily.
This popular company operates in most international airports in Europe.
It has some of the lowest fares with ticket prices starting from €5.80 and discounts for advance booking and round trip tickets.
Children up to 4 years old travel for free.
Terravision buses all terminate at Termini and depart from Fiumicino every 30 minutes daily from 5:35 am to 11:00 pm.
In the opposite direction (from Termini to Fiumicino) buses run from 4:40 am to 9:50 pm.

If you buy tickets online (button above) you’re asked to indicate the date/time of your trip.
Choose your date carefully but don’t worry about the time: depending on availability you can take any bus on your chosen day regardless of the time you have indicated.
You don’t need to print out your ticket: just show it on your mobile phone.
This company offers cheap tickets (starting from €4.50 each way) and also includes a handy night service.
It goes to Termini or Ostiense station with just one intermediate stop in the city of Fiumicino.
Buses run every 30 to 60 minutes.

This company offers a daily bus from Fiumicino to Roma Termini station, the Vatican area (Via Crescenzio 2), and to the Aurelia 19 ring road.
Tickets cost €6.00 for one way and €11.00 for a round trip ticket.
Buses from the airport run from 7:15 am to 12:40 am. Those from Termini go from 4:35 am to 8:30 pm.

It’s no secret that the most comfortable transport from Fiumicino airport to Rome is by taxi.
You can grab one at the designated taxi stand right outside the arrivals.
Just be aware that Roman taxis are generally expensive and drivers have a reputation for overcharging tourists and even locals.
In order to avoid unpleasant surprises you should know that when it comes to official, licensed taxis airport to the city centre prices are fixed.

Also keep in mind that if f you want to pay by card you should tell the driver in advance to make sure it’s actually possible – it’s not always the case.
One way to get avoid getting ripped is to get a free airport taxi quote using Taxileader.
If you’re travelling to Rome from Fiumicino or vice versa with a group of 12 or more people it’s a wise choice to book a private transfer service that will take you from the terminal to your accommodation.
I suggest grabbing a quote on the Suntransfer website for the best prices.
Suntransfer also has car seats for kids up to 4 years old.
Choosing to rent a car is a good solution for those who want to feel free from fixed timetables and routes.
Remember though that Rome is not an easy place for driving and parking.
All major car rental companies have desks at the airport, right by the exit.

Luggage storage at Fiumicino requires a bit of patience.
If you don’t see your bags appearing on the carousel right away don’t panic. I find Fiumicino to be a bit slower than most airports. But in the end you’re going to get your bags (fingers crossed).
The screens in the baggage claim area indicating the estimated waiting time for every flight/luggage carousel are fairly accurate.
Luggage storage is located at Terminal 3 and it’s open everyday from 06:30 am to 11.30 pm.
It costs €10.00/day.
If you get to the airport by car you can choose to park either at departures or at the arrivals area.
They are easily recognizable by the road signs but just to be sure remember that departures are located in the upper part of the airport, while the arrivals in the area below.
In both cases it is very important you keep an eye on the time. The maximum waiting time is 15 minutes: after this time you will have to pay an expensive parking fee.
The first 30 minutes after the free time is €3.50 and after that it’s €6.00 an hour.
Long-stay parking costs much less starting from €7.00 a day (outdoor) and €10.00 a day (indoor). You can reserve a parking spot on the airport official website.
If you need a long-term parking you can also look at parking areas just outside the airport offering lower prices and excellent shuttle bus service to the airport terminals.
The cheapest and most popular of them is ParkinGo, just five minutes away from the airport.
If you’re flying in late at night or flying out early morning or for any other reason you need a hotel near Fiumicino airport here are some options for you:
Air Rooms Rome Airport by Hello Sky: this four-star hotel is located inside the airport and connected to the terminals through an overpass. The comfort is sometimes priceless but in this case it will cost you around €200.00 per night.
l’Hilton Garden Inn Rome Airport: located a 5 minute drive from the airport. Prices start from €150.00 per night.
QC Terme Roma Spa and Resort: this is the ideal place if you have a few hours to spare. A magical place with gardens, hammocks, swimming pools, and beauty and wellness treatments. Prices are around €200.00 per night, but you can look at it as a well-deserved relaxing and pampering reward after your intense Rome itineraries.
For something cheaper you’ll have to look a bit further away from the airport. You can find good options in the actual city of Fiumicino and in the areas around Parco Leonardo. Here many hotels offer free transfer to the airport and prices are around €60.00 euros per night for a double room.
